3 reasons the plaid shirt is man’s best fashion friend

by Nate Gee October 27, 2014

Written off in the early 1990’s as a men’s fashion essential thanks to Kurt Cobain and his pals from Nirvana, the plaid shirt has finally made its glorious return to the well dressed man’s closet. A great option in almost any situation, here are three reasons the plaid shirt for men is here to stay.

1. Dress it up, or dress it down

The versatility of plaid is easily one of its best features. If you find yourself in the office from 8 to 5 Monday through Friday, a slim fit plaid shirt paired with dark, solid trousers (black, gray, or blue) will have coworkers asking you for style tips.

When the work day is finally through and the crew is planning to meet up at the old watering hole for a couple of drinks and to watch the game, there's no need to change your shirt. Pair the plaid shirt you wore to work with dark jeans and boots and you’re good to go.

2. Layers, layers, layers

Fall and winter mean there is a chill in the air once again. No one wants to be cold while enjoying the great outdoors, but wearing a big, baggy ski jacket isn’t really an option either. Plaid shirts are the perfect option to create stylish, warm layers this cold season. Try a plaid button down under a solid sweater, or plaid under a gray or black hooded sweatshirt. Plaid can be the outer layer too; a gray or white long sleeved undershirt paired with heavy plaid on top will keep you toasty without the extra bulk.

3. Comfort never looked so good

There is no denying that plaid shirts are the most comfortable button down shirts around. Comfort is not usually associated with style, but the plaid shirt for men bucks that trend.

So there you have it, three of the many reasons that plaid shirts for men are this fall and winter’s must have fashion staple. Whether you are grinding it out in the office, going for a jaunt with the lady at the local pumpkin patch, or just going for a night out with the boys, plaid is your best friend.
